Book Your Summer Staycation!

Book Your Summer Staycation

Midwinter dreams of summer: holidays at ‘home’

It’s in the depths of winter that most of us start thinking about holidays in the sun. Travel agents report that Boxing Day reliably sees a major spike in bookings. With Christmas behind us, we need something new to look forward to! And the ‘bookings season’ continues into the new year. What better new year’s resolution than to make the most of next summer?

Traditionally, that meant planning a week or two in the Med, the Caribbean or somewhere else with guaranteed warmth and sunshine. In recent years, though, many of us have been rediscovering the joys of the domestic holiday or ‘staycation’. Of course, it started because of pandemic travel restrictions. And the ongoing uncertainties and costs associated with travel in the age of Covid. The good news, though, is that many Brits are coming to see it as a positive choice rather than a substitute for something better.

Holidays in the UK don’t have to be a consolation prize

In fact, one reason for booking your summer holiday as early as December is that some destinations book up fast. Sunny Cornwall is notoriously popular. After all it’s as close as you can get to Spain without leaving mainland Britain! Holiday lets in Scotland and Wales also tend to fill up fast. Holidaymakers from England join locals flooding from the cities into areas of outstanding natural beauty. And Brits from all over love to visit the Lake District.

Of course, nobody would mistake Cumbria for Calabria. (Though last summer’s heatwave saw at least a week of high temperatures and uninterrupted sunshine!) The charm of the Lake District lies in its stunning scenery. Rolling fells. Glittering lakes. The occasional red squirrel. This is Beatrix Potter country. And generation after generation of holidaymakers were falling in love with the place long before the pandemic.

Pack your raincoat and your shorts

British weather is famously fickle. And nowhere more so than Cumbria. A Lake District summer holiday can be see what seems like a sampler of all four seasons in the course of an afternoon. Walkers in the fells will often have a raincoat strapped around their waists even as they wear shorts and a sun hat. And sooner or later they’ll need it! But for many, there’s something to be said for a bit of variety. Hot sunny weather all the time gets a bit monotonous. And nothing refreshes like a summer shower. Or even a spot of driving rain.

Best of all, a variety of weather brings out the beauty of the British countryside. Clouds swirling around hilltops and rain trickling through the leaves are all part of the package. And you simply can’t beat a rainbow over Lake Windermere for sheer, scenic drama. And after a day’s exploring in the great British outdoors, there’s nothing like coming back to a home-from-home holiday let. Kick off those walking boots and get the oven on for dinner. Then relax as you watch the weather through the window!

Residential Estates have a variety of holiday lettings available throughout the country. Check out our Eden Grove development for holidays in Cumbria. And see out the rest of winter with something special to look forward to.
