See the Lakes on two wheels

Halifax: your home from home in the heart of West Yorkshire

See the Lakes on two wheels

Cycling is more than a mode of transport. For many, it’s a sport, a leisure activity or a form of exercise. For some, it’s more like a way of life. One thing most cyclists have in common is a love of the great outdoors. Even city commuters appreciate the chance to take to the open roads. For others, there’s nothing like gathering mud while careening down a mountainside. So no wonder the cycling holiday is a growing trend.

Some like to cycle the route of the Tour de France or Giro d’Italia. Others seek adventure on the never-ending roads of Australia. But cycling holidays with stunning views can be had a lot closer to home. The English Lake District really cannot be beaten. The fells and lakes are stunning. And there is a wide variety of range of country lanes, permitted cycleways and bridleways to enjoy them from.

Choose your tour

A wealth of stunning long-distance cycling trails can be found in the Lake District and Cumbria more widely. For sea views, you can ride along Morecambe Bay. History fans can cycle the length of Hadrian’s Wall. (The 174 miles being easier on two wheels than two feet!) And the 260-mile Cumbrian Cycle Way takes in a range of attractions. The Lakes and Dales Cycle Loop takes you through Yorkshire and then back into coastal Cumbria. And there’s also a fantastic route across the North Pennines to Wear or Whitby on the east coast.

Après cycle options

Whether you are a dedicated road racer or a thrill-seeking mountain biker, the possibilities are endless. After a day on the saddle, cool off with a dip in Buttermere. Enjoy a cruise on Coniston’s unique steam-powered yacht, or on one of Windermere’s many tour boats. Or indeed hire a simple rowing boat on Grasmere. (And work out a different set of muscles!) Alternatively, you can settle down for the evening in a cosy Cumbrian pub.

Home from home

Whatever your plans, you’ll need a comfortable base for your cycling holiday. And you could not do much better than Eden Grove. This beautiful new residential lettings development is just outside the market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in the heart of the Eden Valley. (The valley’s quiet roads are ever popular with cyclists.) The development boasts a range of comfortable and stylish modern apartments in and around a beautifully adapted historic building. Whether you are just a couple or a larger group, there’s a place for you. So check out the options – then check those tyres!
