Chester isn’t just the home of Residential Estates, it’s also a beautiful, vibrant and historic city that has proven incredibly popular with our short term lettings customers.
Surrounded by the most complete city walls in Britain, Chester is a hive of history, culture and hospitality, offering you a wonderfully complete city break no matter your interests.
Now that lockdown is hopefully coming to an end, today, we take a look at 8 of the most fun activities in the Roman city of Chester.
From ice cream to race horses, centurions to exotic animals, let’s take a look at what activities Chester has to offer to it’s guests…
1: Chester Racecourse & Chester Races
Chester Racecourse is oldest operating racecourse in the world, having been open since 1539 but trust us, it’s anything but a historical site.
Still proving to be some of the biggest events in the Chester calendar, The Races bring in thousands of racegoers from all over the world each season.
Post race season, The Racecourse is home to a number of events such as Chester Comic Con, Chester Food Festival and even hosted their own music festival, Chester Rocks!
The racecourse is situated along the famous city walls which makes it easy to get to from anywhere in the city.
After a short hiatus due to Covid, the 2021 season starts from May 5th and concludes on October 2nd, with tickets now available.
2: The Dewa Roman experience
Well known as a heritage site, Chester is steeped in history, from Edwardian and Georgian buildings rubbing shoulders with Victorian architecture to the cities historic and world famous Roman Walls.
The Dewa Roman experience offers guests the chance to see, smell and feel what life was like in Chester when the Roman’s walked the walls.
Along with the excellent museum and attraction tour, Dewa Roman Experience also offers an excellent way to experience the history of Chester, allowing guests the chance to walk the city with your own roman centurion as a tour guide!
It’s a highly recommended experience that will show you the secret history of the city.
3: The Ice Cream Farm
This is the perfect family day out and a real treat for lovers of all things delicious!
The Ice Cream Farm isn’t just about frozen treats, (even if they have won a multitude of awards for their ice cream), it also has sand pits, water play, soft play areas and mini carts, all in one venue.
If you’re looking for a great family day out, we can’t recommend The Ice Cream Farm enough.
Located just outside of Chester, it’s well worth the drive for the ice cream alone!
4: The Storyhouse
One for the culture vultures, The Storyhouse is a pioneering theatre, cinema, performance space and library which also offers an incredible dining experience.
The beating heart of Chester’s creative communities, The Storyhouse excels at offering a rich and diverse programme of events for all ages.
From world class comedians, thought provoking theatre and the thrill of the latest blockbusters, The Storyhouse is the perfect place to experience culture in the city.
The restaurant has become very well loved in it’s own right, serving delicious Mediterranean influenced meals and an excellent selection of beers, wines and spirits.
5: Chester Boat Tours
The river Dee is one of Chester’s favourite spots for tourists, the iconic Grosvenor Bridge, bandstand and roman walls are some of the most popular photography spots in the city.
One of the best ways to experience the river, however, is by Chester Boat tours iconic river boat tours.
The Mark Twain and Lady Diana are two of the cities most iconic sights, having been a popular tourist attraction for over 30 years.
Easily accessible from the city centre and offering half hour and 2-hour tours of the local waterways, the boat tours are a wonderful way to take in some of the lesser seen, but no less picturesque, sights of the city.
6: Chester Market Foodcourt
A hidden gem, the foodcourt in Chester Market has fast become one of THE places to eat in the city.
With a craft beer bar, cocktails and some incredible artisan restaurants, all in one location, it really is heaven for foodies.
Some of our favourites include Death By Tacos, Stile Napolitano and Try Thai, offering traditional Mexican tacos, award winning Neapolitan pizza and delicious noodle dishes respectively.
The best part is that no matter where you get your food, there’s a lovely central area to eat so no matter what your group is in the mood for, everyone can still eat and drink together.
The foodcourt even has late night openings on Friday and Saturdays which makes it a wonderful spot to start your evening if you’re planning on sampling some of Chester’s coolest bars.
7: Chester Zoo
No trip to Chester would be complete without a visit to Chester’s world famous zoo.
Located just outside of the city centre, the zoo has become renowned for both it’s incredible conservation efforts and it’s amazing array of animals.
Recently featured on BBC’s hit show, “The Secret Life of the Zoo”, it’s been a huge attraction for guests in the city since 1931.
Recently, the zoo added the Manado play area and The Islands attraction and there have even been some new additions to the family, with the zoo successfully breeding a rare baby Rothschild Giraffe and a rare Okapi!
8: Chester Bus Tour
Finally, after all of the activities, a relaxing trip around the city is in order!
The Chester Bus Tour is an excellent choice for those who are keen to see the city, learn it’s history and get some excellent photo opportunities.
One of our favourite things is the ability for you to hop off and on the bus as you wish, meaning if you spot something you’d like to see closer, you’re more than welcome to take the trip at your own pace.
It’s a great way to see the city, get around and learn even more about this beautiful and historic city.
